The Story Behind Sakari
From the Beginning ... Dogs have always been a huge part of my life, I was born into a family obsessed with all kinds of animals. From your everyday house pets, to farm animals, even some wildlife rescue. Born and raised on Long Island, NY, by my grandparents who adopted me. They used to show and breed English Bulldogs and I can remember going to dog shows with them before I was even old enough to go to school.
Fast Forward to 2004 ... After my grandparents gave up showing, I figured it was time I got a breed of my own. My birthday was coming up, I asked my grandparents for a Border Collie - I wanted an active breed to play with, that would always be at my side and be my best friend. My Nana found a breeder not too far from us and said we were going to look at Australian Shepherd puppies. Australian Shepherd puppies? What was an Australian Shepherd? I was just trying to figure out how my grandparents confused a Border Collie with an Australian Shepherd - they don't even sound the same. Well we went to look at these Australian Shepherd puppies and I fell in love! I fell in love and I haven't looked back since! I didn't know it at the time, but that moment was the start of Sakari Australian Shepherds and it all started with one little pup named Novia - McG's Ave Maria of Anie, RN. So when someone asks, "What made you decide to get an Aussie?" ... my reply is, "Well actually it wasn't my idea at all, lol. I wanted a Border Collie - it was my grandmother who came across this amazing breed."
Where Did The Name "Sakari" Come From?
I wanted something different, something unique - like the Australian Shepherd. So I started to Google all different types of names, eventually I came across the name Sakari. Then I started to search what Sakari meant in other languages. I was very pleased with what I found and it didn't take me long to decide on the name. Sakari has a double meaning behind the name. In Native American, Sakari means sweet. In Finish, Sakari means to be remembered by God... And it's not the fact that I wanted to be remember by God, but just the thought of the name Sakari being remembered, becoming a part of history in the dog world. In my opinion, the name Sakari was short, sweet, and different from the rest - just like the Aussie. Plus, I just liked the look and sound of Sakari Australian Shepherds!
What Is Preservation Breeding?
Preservation Breeding is the attempt to preserve and protect valuable bloodlines, genetic traits and pedigrees within a specific breed - this takes years of dedication, hard work and mentorship. Preservation Breeders will show their dogs against the breed standard, to prove they are a good example of the breed. Preservation Breeders will Health Test all their breeding stock to ensure they produce healthy and happy puppies, as best they can. Preservation Breeds care about the puppies they bring into this world and will do their utmost to place them in forever, loving homes. Preservation Breeders become Mentors and Teachers - taking their knowledge and passing it on to new-comers of the breed. Not all breeders are Preservation Breeders. Sakari takes pride knowing that we are doing our part in helping to preserve and protect this beautiful breed for generations to come.
